This past weekend was a long weekend, and while we spent a good deal of it working and prepping for the apartment hunt, we took our extra day to celebrate our birthday AND Australia's b-day too! January 26 is Australia Day, which marks the arrival of the first British ships in 1788. We decided to be as Australian as possible, so we geared up with some Aussie camo...you know, so as to blend in with the natives. We started our day with the Aussiest of brekkies...the noble TimTam and a cuppa. (OK, so maybe the Aussiest would involve Vegemite, but it was Aussier than cereal.) Fun Fact: While the Australian national flag is obviously red, white and blue, our national colors are green and gold. |
Cue bajillions of animal photos and footage in 3...............2......................
...starting with these adorable guys. I seriously cannot get enough of them. They're all over here and you can see them in the sky almost any evening. The flying fox is one of the coolest animals you can see on a daily (well, nightly) basis around the Sydney area. There is obviously a lot of unique wildlife in Australia, but it's not as if you see koalas hanging out in trees as you drive down the motorway. Flying foxes, however, seem to be everywhere around here, and a.) they are adorable; b.) have I mentioned that they look like mini, fuzzy pterodactyls??; and c.) seriously...totes adorbs. Here's a video of feeding time...Flying foxes eat nectar, blossoms, pollen and fruit, and, unlike bats that use echolocation, have highly developed eyesight and sense of smell. Fun Fact: Their scientific name is Pteropus ("Ptero..." like "Pterodactyl". Boom. - nailed it.) They are the largest bat in the world. |
Fun Fact: Koalas sleep 18-22 hours a day and are basically eating the rest of the time. They are real-life Garfields...if Garfield ate leaves instead of lasagna...and lived in a tree...in Australia.
